Dakota is a loving, funny, stubborn, (loud!) 5-year-old Shetland Sheepdog gentleman from Farmington Hills, Michigan.

Dakota is a Native American word meaning ‘trusted friend,’ and his name won the popular vote in a naming contest for a canine character in the new Amy Shojai book, “Lost and Found!”

He loves eating bones, being brushed, modeling and playing with his ball, and he’s a great brother to Cody, the cat.

His mom, Caren Gittleman, says he can spell! (You’ll have to ask him about that…)

You can get to know the handsome and adored Dakota better on his mom’s Community Page, at his blog: Dakota’s Den, onFacebook and on Twitter @dakotasheltie.

Seasons GREENIES® A Surprise for me AND for YOU! GREENIES® CANINE DENTAL CHEWS!!

Hi every doggy! (and kitties that may be in attendance!) it’s Dakota!

I just love this time of year! Everybody is happy, people are exchanging love, caring, presents, even licks! One of my favorite things is when I receive an unexpected gift! That is EXACTLY what happened last week!

I was just sitting around, minding my business, listening for sounds and watching out the window for any doggy that might be going potty in MY territory, when what did my alert Sheltie ears hear? A knock at the door!

After alerting my Mom and Dad by doing my best Sheltie barks and continuing on for 20 minutes AFTER the fact, my Mom showed me what had arrived.

What in the world?? Mom and I looked at each other in surprise. We weren’t expecting anything. I was overcome with excitement, I was spinning 100 times faster than my normal cyclone-speed Sheltie spins! ….Hurry Mom! Open it! What’s inside?

greenies letter

There was a lovely message wrapped in a festive Christmas-green bow. SOMEBODY LOVES ME!  I was jumping on Mom begging her to read faster and to begin opening the package already!

BOOK REVIEW: Cooking for Dogs (New Recipes from Dog’s Deli) by Friederike Friedel

Hi everyone! It’s Dakota! Mom was excited when she heard that November 1st is National Cook For  Your Pets Day a day where pet pawrents make the pledge to focus on our health and nutrition by making us tasty meals and/or treats!

Anyone that knows my Mom knows that she LOVES to cook! She not only loves to cook but she collects cookbooks…TONS of ’em!  Does she cook for me? HA! That’s a joke! Rarely. She will make me the occasional burger or turkey burger, but cook a full-fledged meal? NO! Hopefully that now that she took the pledge on the National Cook For Your Pets Day website AND received the book: Cooking For Dogs (New Recipes From Dog’s Deli) which was published by www.schifferbooks.com, things might just change!

Mom was  thrilled as she was going through this book! The photos are beautiful, the recipes seem to be not only nutritious but easy to make!!

As is often the case with Mom, she is reviewing this book out-of-order. It is the second of TWO books, the first, Baking For Dogs will be featured here Friday, November 9th! Mom chose to feature the “cooking” book first since she considers herself to be more of a cook than a baker.

Meet “Billy!!” Photo provided by http://www.schifferbooks.com

Now, let’s get to the book! Meet Billy! Billy is not only an incredibly handsome Labrador, he is a food taster for Dog’s Deli!! Billy supervised the recipes that his people first developed at home in their kitchen in 2005.  He supervised the cutting of vegetables and fruit and various other duties from his spot right in front of the oven and always ate the first finished biscuits.  If for some reason Billy didn’t approve of the recipe then it had to be changed until he would gobble it up!

Dog’s Deli opened in 2006 and they have developed over 40 recipes! According to Billy, Banana is the biscuit that his doggy buddies love the most! It is a top-secret recipe and guess what? It is the first recipe featured in this new book!

This book is a human “foodies” and “dog foodies”” dream!  One of the first blogging doggies who popped into my mind while reading this was Easy! Since his Mom is always making him delectable meals, we are thinking that Easy and all of you, will LOVE THIS BOOK!

From www.schifferbooks.com: Treat your pooch to healthy, all natural snacks and meals that are easy to make and even easier to watch disappear. Detailed ingredients, tips, and instructions provide the essentials for mastering a well-balanced diet. There’s even a section on nutrition for older dogs. Become the alpha chef as you prepare muffins, biscuits, elaborate feasts, and much more.

There are six chapters and each chapter features recipes from various stages of Billy’s life.

An example of this is Chapter 3 , Billy’s Puppyhood, here we find a recipe for the Fitness Biscuit

“Fitness Biscuit” Photo courtesy of http://www.schifferbooks.com

Mom knew immediately that this is a “good for me” biscuit just by looking at some of the ingredients such as:

  • wheat flour
  • apple
  • low-fat yogurt
  • honey

Ha!! I’m not giving you the entire recipe! You will have to pawchase the book to get it for yourself!

To tease you further,  there is a recipe for Chicken Feast which would be a super easy, nutritious and tasty go-to for your daily fare

“Chicken Feast” Photo courtesy of http://www.schifferbooks.com

This recipe consists of chicken breast, rice, carrot and water. Carrots are a great, non-fat alternative to sometimes fattening bones and treats.

One of many things that Mom loves about this book is at the bottom of each recipe there is a box that says “Made for the first time on” where your Mom can write notes about when she made it and about how much you liked it! There are also training tips, etc. peppered throughout.

A  “Notes” section is in the back of the book, it is 78 pages and is made beautifully on glossy, high-quality paper. Also in the back of the book is a “Glossary for a Healthy Life-Style”

So? What do you think? I think this book is just great and I am certain you will think so too! Mom hasn’t made anything yet, but she assures me that she will soon!  After reading this book I am quite hungry! Maybe I can convince her to cook something for me today?

Barks and licks and love, Dakota
