Three Women Make a Difference: One Dog at a Time By:  Carol Bryant

One person can make a difference in the life of an animal. How many of us can relate to that statement? If you love a dog, cat, or anything in between, at some  point you wished you could do more. Perhaps if there was some way to reach out and help those innocent faces scrolling through your Facebook timeline, right? How can we stop the Michael Vicks of the world?

The same questions resonated through the minds of Molly Mednikow, Sara Henderson, and Susan Hollar. They had the same “what more can I do” thought racing through their minds and then they did something very special: They acted on it.

Molly Mednikow is the Founder and Executive Director of Amazon CARES. She answered the call of the wild, so to speak, as when she decided to move to Peru and start an animal welfare charity. She grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and divides her time these days between Atlanta, Georgia, and Iquitos, Peru.

Recently Amazon CARES made international headlines. Recently an  unprecedented verdict has been reached in the Iquitos area of Peru, where the not-for-profit organization, Amazon CARES, secured a conviction in the case of a woman who was charged with poisoning a 5-month-old puppy.

“In this particular case, Amazon CARES , in partnership with the Iquitos Bar Association, had been working with legislative officials to enforce and/or strengthen animal cruelty laws,” Amazon CARES’ Founder and Executive Director, Molly Mednikow, shares. “This case, of a  neighbor intentionally poisoning and killing her neighbor’s puppy, is the first case we have brought to trial.”

Making a difference, one life at a time, is certainly the focus for Molly Mednikow and Amazon CARES.

Here in the states, Sara Henderson and Susan Hollar are making a difference in feeding dogs one bag at a time, one shelter at a time, and of course, one dog at a time.

BOGO Bowl premium dog food is produced in Ohio, with protein, fruit, and vegetables, and contains no artificial fillers, colors, or flavors; no corn, wheat, or soy used as filler. The starches in BOGO Bowl dog food are encapsulated to ensure less fermentation in the dog’s body, and hip healthy vitamins are included in most formulas. Sara Henderson is the CEO and brainchild behind the company, which is poised to go national. BOGO Bowl sells seven types of dog food online and contributes food to shelter partners across the United States, with a buy one, give one concept.

All BOGO Bowl formulas meet AAFCO criteria for healthy, quality pet food. Formulas included Puppy, Maintenance, Healthy Weight, Lamb Meal and Rice, Chicken Meal and Rice, Salmon Meal and Rice, and No Grain.

Sara knew she wanted to make the world a better place for animals -– she put that phrase on a “vision board” in 2008 –- and she started the process in 2009 when she founded the Pet Project Midwest. Her concept: Buy a bag of dog food, and her group will give a bag to a shelter pet in the same area where the food was bought.

If you are anything like me, when you donate to a rescue group that is not in your area, you really hope (and cross your paws) that the money is used to feed and save dogs affiliated with that group. Sara and Susan agreed, so for every bag of their BOGO Bowl dog food purchased, they ship the equivalent of the same food to a nonprofit shelter of the buyer’s choice.

It can be done: making the difference in the life of an animal. One by one, click by click, bag by bag, when each of us does something, together we do so very much.

  11. My humans are always complaining that they don’t do enough for rescues. I have to keep reminding them it’s not possible to rescue every animal but they can help in different ways by making donations. Ok we mightn’t have a big pack but the ones in rescue are getting looked after.

    Sheba.

    • Sheba my Mom feels the same way. She became more involved this year than ever but still needs to be even MORE involved! You are so right about donating…doesn’t have to be money either. It can be newspaper, paper towels, toys, the list goes on and on…oh and FOOD!! Barks and licks and love, Dakota
