“Devious?” Never! “Clever?” Of course! “Genius?” ABSOLUTELY!

Happy Friday all! Yep, I’m late! Almost wasn’t even going to be able to blog today with all that is going on at my house, but duty or is it DOODY? calls!

Today I am going to tell you about an award I was given by my buddy Toby over at

Click on the photo to visit Toby’s blog!

This award was a new one to me! Check it out!

The requirements that one must complete upon accepting this award, is to name and link to the doggy who gave it to you…DONE!

You know what? I am not sure what the other requirements are, but to prove that I am worthy of this award, I am going to elaborate on a couple of things that Toby mentioned in his post that we seem to have in common. Once you read these you will know that I was a deserving recipient.

TOBY EATS DOG POOP. YES, you read that correctly. If you think you missed it, let me say this again, TOBY EATS DOG POOP. Ya know what? So do I! Does that make me “devious?” Nooo…it makes me a genius and proves that I am quite  clever! Why? All dog poop is, is the same food that I just ate right before I  pooped!! It’s just in a more palatable form! It’s packed with nutrients and comes with the added bonus of dirt, cat fur, dust bunnies and whatever else I  may have ingested while going about my  daily “business.”  With everyone being so concerned about the environment, consider it a form of recycling and get over it, ok?

TOBY DOESN’T DO WELL WITH COMMANDS.  Neither do I. Let me put it to you this way, do YOU like to be told what to do? What if you feel like running and someone tells you to SIT? What if you want to rest and someone tells you to COME?  What if you found a hundred-zillion dollars and someone told you to LEAVE IT!! You wouldn’t listen, would you? Well, my 2-legged friends I am  no different than you! I have the ability to think, and in some cases I can exercise sound REASONING skills as well! I will be the one to decide WHAT I will do and WHEN I will do it! Being a Shetland Sheepdog I am the 6th most intelligent dog of the top 20 breeds. Don’t believe me? See for yourself!

1 – border collie
2 – poodle
3 – German shepherd
4 – golden retriever
5 – doberman pinscher
6 – shetland sheepdog
7 – Labrador retriever
8 – papillon
9 – rottweiler
10 – Australian cattle dog
11 – Pembroke welsh corgi
12 – miniature schnauzer
13 – English springer spaniel
14 – Belgian terrine
15 – schipperke / Belgian sheepdog
16 – collie / keeshound
17 – German short haired pointer
18 – flat coated retriever / English cocker spaniel / standard schnauzer
19 – Brittany spaniel
20 – cocker spaniel

See? I don’t need YOU to make decisions for me. You want TRICKS….buy a SEAL!

I could go on and on with further examples of why I am worthy of this award but one thing that makes me even more clever and even more of a genius is that I know when to STOP. Well, unless I am on a barking binge but I digress…

Now I am supposed to award this to 7 other bloggers!  Ok…here we go, if you have already received this just pretend I never told you about the award, it will be our little secret.

It’s EASY!!!! click on the photo to visit his blog

That’s it. Yeah, I KNOW that that’s not SEVEN. Did you NOT read my post above? I DON’T DO WELL WITH COMMANDS and I am the SIXTH MOST INTELLIGENT. I told you, I MAKE the decisions.  I don’t care what some arbitrary award tells me to do, “it’s MY way or the HIGHWAY!!” Now, if you will excuse me, I think I will go and:

EAT SOME POOP!!

Summer heat getting to you? Us too! Wordless Wednesday

Feeling cooler?

Barks and licks and love, Dakota

KEEP YOUR PETS PROTECTED FROM THE HOT WEATHER

This has been one heck of a summer so far! Much of the country has experienced temps of 90+ degrees since mid June which is simply unheard of in places such as Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and places further North. Today in Michigan the high is supposed to reach 102 degrees!!! They say that August is the “dog days of summer” if  June and July have been this hot, I hate to see what August will bring!

It is timely that I received this press release from Michigan Humane. I know that many of you have covered the high temperature situation on your blogs, but to me, it is a deeply serious issue that can never be stressed enough. Please enjoy today’s post from Michigan Humane, and take good care of your babies!.

Love, Dakota and “Mom”

Dogs are great companions and, as we all know, love riding in the car. But in warm weather, it’s most often safer to leave them at home. Even on a relatively mild 85-degree day, parked in the shade with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a car could reach 102 degrees Fahrenheit in just 10 minutes. When the outside air is over 100, the inside of a car can reach 120 or more.

In warm weather, the overheated air in a parked car interferes with a pet’s normal cooling process because, unlike humans, dogs and cats do not perspire to cool their bodies down – they pant. When the air they breathe is overheated, the evaporation that usually occurs during panting is insufficient to allow proper cooling. A pet, like a child, can only withstand a higher body temperature for a very short time before suffering irreparable brain damage – or even death.

If you see an animal in immediate distress in a parked car, ask the store to make an announcement or, if necessary, contact local animal control or police in your area. In Detroit, Hamtramck or Highland Park, call the Michigan Humane Society’s Cruelty Hotline at (313) 872-3401. Also contact these agencies if you notice a dog kept outside without adequate food, water or shelter.

Here are some additional warm weather pet safety tips from the Michigan Humane Society:

  • MHS strongly recommends that pets live indoors with the rest of the family, year-round. In the summer, this will also help prevent heat-related illness and reduce exposure to mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and internal parasites.
  • Bring animals inside during hot or humid weather. Pets should not be left outside in very warm, humid conditions for extended periods, even in the shade.

  • Ensure that pets have access to plenty of fresh, cool water at all times – indoors and out. Hydration is critical to help your pet regulate his body temperature.
  • Avoid chaining or tethering a dog outside. He may get twisted and become unable to reach shade or water, or his water dish may get knocked over.
  • In homes without air conditioning, use fans to keep air circulating or keep your pet in a cooler area of the house, such as the basement, during the hottest part of the day.
  • Avoid vigorously exercising pets during the heat of the day. Instead, take walks in the early morning or evening hours. Avoid hot concrete or asphalt surfaces as they may cause damage or discomfort to the animal’s paw pads.
  • Keep in mind that old, young and short-nosed animals such as bulldogs, pugs and Himalayan or Persian cats are especially susceptible to heat stroke. However, it is a concern for all pets during hot weather.
  • If you open windows in your home, be sure the screens are secure to prevent cats or other pets from falling out.
  • Never leave pets unattended around swimming pools, to help prevent accidents.

If your pet is overcome by heat, you can give immediate first aid by immersing him in cool water. If you are unable to immerse him, lay him on cool, shaded grass, pour cold water over him and call your pet’s veterinarian immediately.

Sad-Wordless Wednesday

I was given ANOTHER Award!!

I woke up on Sunday morning to a wonderful surprise! I am the lucky recipient of the:

I was overcome with happiness because this award didn’t just come from anyone, no siree, it came from a KITTY and a SUPER SPECIAL KITTY at that!

This “lovely” award was given to me by:

Click on the photo to visit Katie’s blog!!

It is nice enough when you are a doggy and the award is given to you by a fellow canine, but when you can cross species and are given an award by a KITTY, well, then, that  just rocks my world!!

Part of the rules of this award are I am supposed to tell you 7 things about myself….I am probably repeating myself on some of these so if I have, I am sorry!

1) Katie TOTALLY helped me out by giving me this award because I was supposed to be doing a product review and give-away but the company never sent me the product to test!!  They forgot!! Hey ya snooze, ya lose!!

2) I am at the vet today for a follow-up urine test from my UTI that I had about two weeks ago. Please cross your paws that all goes well!

For the next few things about me I asked my Daddy. Mom usually helps me with these but I decided to have Daddy add his comments for a change!

This is one of Daddy’s sisters. Also known as my “Aunt Nancy” I go insane when she comes to visit. I show her TONS of affection!

3) He says I am extremely affectionate. I would have to agree. If I were a politician I would be kissing all the babies and women!

4) I’m sensitive.  I’m all about hearts and flowers. My sensitivity shines in my eyes. Don’t believe me? Here is what I posted last Valentine’s Day:

5) I eat anything and everything. I guess I wouldn’t make it on Hell’s Kitchen because I am not known for having a refined palate.I will eat anything from cell phones to wood. If it can be chewed, I’m all over it!

This was particularly delicious. The green color gave it a “Minty Fresh” taste. I was stopped from my fine dining experience before I could get to the delicious licorice flavored battery

I don’t understand why everyone was so upset that I did this! They tell you to eat enough fiber daily and then when you listen to them you get yelled at! Geeze!

6) I have a zillion toys, but what is my ultimate “go-to?” My mangy  red, white & blue ball that Mom purchased a few years ago at the Dollar Store!!

“Hooray for the red, white & blue!!!”

7) This is probably the best one yet. I have a real “thing” about “I Can’t Believe It’s not Butter”  Mom and Dad cannot figure it out. For some reason I can’t stand the bottle. Mom thinks it is hilarious to pull the spray bottle out of the fridge and just let me look at it. Dad says that’s mean. I would have to agree!  Looking at that bottle to me is the equivalent of making someone watch The Exorcist against their will!

Click on the logo to visit their website. I may not like looking at the stuff but Mom sure enjoys EATING it! Many others do too!

Just the SIGHT of it makes me go berserk

 See for yourself:

Another requirement of this award is that I pass it on to I forget how many other blogs. Ok, here’s the dirt, when I pass it on I  get in trouble, when I don’t I STILL get in trouble!!

My Mom and Cody did give some awards out recently, only to find out a number of people either :

had already received them.

don’t want awards because they are time-consuming.

or those that weren’t selected get their feelings hurt.

So, I am going to say that Mom and I  follow TONS of blogs and once again, if we follow you,  you are ALREADY AWARD-WORTHY! So, wrap your paws around this and enjoy!!! If you have a blog we know how hard it is to keep up with all that entails, so please accept this with love and gratitude!!!

Barks and licks and love, Dakota

In full disclosure: no bottles of “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” were hurt in the filming of Dakota’s video. Nor did Mom and I receive a dime, a bone, or a bottle of their butter for mentioning them here. Why? Because no one reads this blog anyway, so they will never know! BOL!!

Thankful Thursday- We Received The Very Inspiring Blogger Award!

I am one excited Sheltie!!! The other day when Mom and I were reading blogs, we discovered that we were given an award!!!

The award we received is a super special one and we are THANKFUL to have received it!! It is the:

and it was given to us by our new buddies over at My Dog Sheba’s Life StoryMom and I get a kick  out of this blog because they have a  cat in their family named CODY too!! Imagine that!

The rules are simple in accepting this award. We are supposed to thank the person (or doggy) who gave it to us, THANK YOU My Dog Sheba’s Life Story  and link back to them. DONE!!! Then…we are supposed to tell you seven things about us! HERE WE GO!!

1) Like Sheba, I also LOVE to lick people’s feet. One might even call me obsessed. If you have a foot, preferably a freshly pawdicured and lotioned one, I am ALL OVER IT! Dad finds it charming, Mom? Not so much!

2) I do NOT like going for walks. I used to, back in my younger days. I wasn’t jaded then. After a territorial “Mother Goose” nearly bit my head off when I innocently was checking out her babies, and a garbage truck decided to make too much noise for my liking, that put a SEVERE damper on my walks.

3) I like being groomed. It’s impawtant for a manly Sheltie to keep his fur looking good at all times!! Got a brush? Come on over!

4)  Like Sheba, I also like love to be  around my humans. When my pack is away I’m a sad Sheltie for the day!

5) Also like Sheba, I LOVE my cat brother Cody!!!

6) I can spell!! It just dawned on me that I might have told you that before. If I did, just humor me and pretend that I didn’t. ‘k?

7) I like to scale our couch thinking I am a CAT! The first time I did this my Mom nearly died laughing. I came up behind her while she was watching TV and BOOM!!! I had crawled up the back of the couch and walked along the top!! I was pretending I was a CAT!!! It always looks so cool when Cody does it that I had to try it!

The other requirement of this award is to pass it on to 15 other bloggers who inspire us. This is a hard one. We are not going to do that because:

1) We don’t know if some pals have already received this award

2) Some blogs like to stay “award free”, while appreciating the awards, they don’t always have time to do a blog post about them.

3)  We follow way more than 15 blogs and don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings by not passing this on to them!

Soooo, if you haven’t received this award and would like to claim it as your own, GO FOR IT! Just link back to us ok? We would one day  like to have more than 6 readers. BOL!!!

Barks and licks and love, Dakota

Sunny Sheltie Saturday!

Last Sunday Mom and I were making the rounds reading the blogs we follow, and boy were we ever surprised when we found out that we received an award from one of our new favorites,  Savannah’s Paw Tracks.

Mom and I were blown away! The award we received was:

the Sunshine Award and we couldn’t be more flattered! Thank you Savannah!! We are honored!!

As with any blogging award there are instructions that must be followed:

Link the award to the person who gave it to you… (check!)

  • Answer the questions that come with it
  • Pass it along to 10 people and let them know they have received it

HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS:

Favorite number:  Never thought about this one before.  I guess my favorite number would have to be TWO. I eat two meals a day and I LOVE to eat, so TWO it is!

Favorite Non-alcoholic drink:  is this a joke? Like a dog would have a favorite alcoholic drink? Seriously?

Facebook or Twitter:  BOTH. They are necessities for every social media minded Sheltie.

My Passion:  you have to ask? SMART BONES! I would give my kingdom for SMART BONES! I get NOTHING for saying that. I am INSANE FOR SMART BONES!!!

Favorite pattern:  the carpet that I lay on to eat my SMART BONES!

Favorite Day of the Week:  Any day that involves food and treats. If I have food and treats then that is a GOOD day!
Favorite Flower:  CAULIFLOWER!! BOL! Wait! I have eaten broccoli but I have never eaten Cauliflower! I guess I just like the sound of it!

Now, that pesky part about passing the award on to 10 bloggers. Mom and I always say this but it is the TRUTH,  if we follow you , you ALREADY bring us SUNSHINE! If you didn’t, we wouldn’t waste our time!

Awards can be tricky things. We don’t want anyone to feel left out, so we would like everyone who stops by our blog to grab this award for themselves! You ALL deserve it!

Book Review And Give-Away! “Organizing the Care of My Dog”, Part of the “WiseUp!” Workbook Series by Morgan T. Orr and Penelope Orr Spry

Many of you will be attending BlogPaws 2012, and while some  of you may be lucky enough to be able to either bring your dog with you, or have a family member stay with them, others have to use the services of either an in-home dog sitter or a kennel.

If you are like me, when you leave notes for a pet sitter, they are typed or chicken-scratched on umpteen pieces of paper which are taped to cupboards or strewn on counters.   All  (or most) of the pertinent information about your dog is there, but it isn’t neatly arranged, and I bet there are things not on the list that you don’t realize are missing until you are winging your way to your destination, thousands of miles away.

I have the perfect solution to this problem!

A few weeks ago I was contacted by WiseUp! Workbooks and they asked me if I would be interested in featuring their Dog Care workbook on my Dakota’s Den.

I admit at first I was skeptical.

That lasted until the book arrived.

This book is SERIOUSLY  AMAZING!

The workbook   has ALL of the “important information you should provide for the care of your dog in the event of your absence-planned or otherwise.”

It is your pet sitter’s  or kennel’s “Wise” guide. They are NOT kidding!

They have thought of information that many of us wouldn’t think of.  All you do is just fill in the blanks. Once you fill out the information it is all in one place…IN the workbook, it is NOT strewn on counters or taped haphazardly throughout your house!

Take a look at some of the chapters in this handy workbook:

  •  Information About My Dog-which has info such as,  date of birth, is the dog spayed or neutered, is the dog Microchipped? It even has an area to attach a photo of your dog which would be important if the unthinkable happened, your dog runs away or is separated from the kennel or sitter in some other way.
  •  Emergency Contact Information
  •   My Dog’s Personality-SUPER important as what works for one dog may not work for another!
  •  Daily Routine and Schedule
  • List and Location of My Dog’s Supplies- we all cover this verbally, but what happens when the person you were sharing the info with wasn’t paying complete attention and they later forget? Yes,. this DOES HAPPEN!
  • Health Care and Pet Insurance Information
  • Financial Arrangements-we don’t like to think about this but it is a necessity. Even I had never given this issue serious thought until I received this workbook.
  • Legal Trust for My Dog (sample Trust included)

And More…

The back of the work book has a handy RESOURCE section that includes websites for:

  • Dog Supplies
  • Dog Bedding
  • Dog Grooming Tools and Supplies
  • Pet Insurance
  • Dog Medications
  • Pet Legal Trusts

I wish I had this book when my husband and I vacationed last February. I know my friend who took care of Dakota and Cody in our absence would have greatly appreciated this workbook because the folks at WiseUp! have thought of EVERYTHING!
